Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that deals with the fundamental assumption that a system of knowledge and/or belief seeks to explain the nature of reality. Within science, a major method of evaluating metaphysical constructs is to determine their usefulness in giving rise to a research program. When they are not subjected to critical evaluation, the metaph
ors expressing the metaphysics become myth. Within chiropractic, a metaphysical construct has been that of innate intelligence. Personally feel as though metaphysical constructs are a legitimate part of science and of the chiropractic profession in particular. Daniel David Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, had an intense interest in metaphysics. Although our understanding of the neuromuscluoskeletal structure and function has significantly advanced today, the fundamental metaphysical principles first described in the chiropractic profession cannot be ignored until proven otherwise.
